Ahmed’s dive plan was for us to go out deep into the blue on the western point of the reef to spot hammerheads, however I was very disappointed to analyse my mix and find that I would be diving with an MOD of 35 metres. I was buddying with Nick and Brian after yesterday’s frustratingly slow dive with Leena.
We descended deep into the blue and I was watching my computer to make sure that I wouldn’t hit my MOD. After a few minutes of hanging in the blue, I saw Ahmed and a few other divers suddenly shoot off away from the reef but I couldn’t see exactly what it was they were chasing.
The three of us swam back to the reef and cruised slowly back up to 10-15 metres along the northern side of the reef, spotting quite a few schools of black and white snapper, a few cruising barracuda, a few hunting tuna, surgeon fish, Titan trigger fish and a few feeding turtles, including one really cute one that was hanging around our safety stop.
Back on the boat, it turns out that there were two hammerhead sharks that everyone was chasing at the beginning of the dive and of course I didn’t see them! Story of my life!!
